Thriller Director Research
‘Hitchcock was a
master of pure cinema who almost never failed to reconcile aesthetics with the
demands of the box-office.’
Alfred Hitchcock joined the film industry in 1920 and as he
was a skilled artist he started off by drawing the sets, and he had his first
big job when the director of ‘Always tell your wife’ became ill he took over as
director to finish the film. This lead to him later being asked to direct ‘Number
13’ in 1923. He then went on to direct
several films until 1940, where due to work commitments he and his family moved
to Hollywood. His fame continued to grow, film companies began to refer to his films
as 'Alfred Hitchcock's', for example Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960).
Psycho is known as being one of the greatest films of all
time for it is one of the most complex and ingenious films of all time, also as it one of the first of the slasher sub-genre It was
also a change in the way that films were made and different to anything that
had been produced before. For example it was the first American film which
featured a flushing toilet. Furthermore relating to thriller it was the first of it's kind to have such violent scenes showing murder, such as the shower scene. Secondly Hitchcock was also one of the first directors to have an effective use of sound to enhance the scene. This is especially seen from the use of screeching violins in the shower murder scene, and it was said that when previously shown with no sound there was very little affect , however with the music it gave a much greater effect. Overall Hitchcock's work was a great progression to the the advancement of american films.
